The musical director of MBSO and the MBSO Youth Symphony is Bronwyn Gibbs, a strings specialist who is Head of Strings at St Paul's School, Bald Hills and conducts the St Paul's Symphony as well as various school string ensembles and chamber groups. Bronwyn has established strings programs at a number of schools in Brisbane and has been conducting community orchestras since 2000.

Bronwyn's qualifications and experience

Bronwyn learnt violin and piano from an early age. After completing ATCL in both violin and piano, and a Diploma of Creative Arts (Music) in Toowoomba at the University of Southern Queensland, where she studied violin under Spiros Rantos; Bronwyn received a two year scholarship to play with the ABC National Training Orchestra in Sydney. On her return to Brisbane in 1984 she completed LTCL in violin, in addition to a Graduate Certificate in Instrumental Pedagogy, a Graduate Certificate in Music Studies and a Master of Music Studies at the University of Queensland.

Bronwyn has been an avid member of AUSTA (Australian Strings Association, Queensland) for many years and has been involved in organizing conferences, music festivals, workshops and concerts, as well as adjudicating competitions.

Bronwyn has performed with many orchestras and ensembles in Queensland, including the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra under the musical direction of Antoni Bonetti. She has also played violin and viola in Redlands Sinfonia, Sunshine Coast Symphony Orchestra, Gold Coast Symphony Orchestra, Northern Rivers Orchestra, St Andrew's Sinfonia, Musicia Antiqua Collegii, the Offenbach Trio, Madeleine Charles Strings, Brisbane Concert Orchestra, Rantos Collegium, Toowoomba Symphony Orchestra and various chamber groups, ensembles and pit orchestras.

Bronwyn's musical philosophy

Bronwyn believes that music is for everyone and that community orchestras cater for a wide range of people, providing musical enjoyment, relaxation and social interaction.

Bronwyn enjoys working with young artists and promoting their talents in composition and performance. Under Bronwyn's direction the orchestra has expanded its repertoire in classical music as well as continuing to play popular and contemporary works.

With a gift for recognizing talent and developing sound orchestral technique, MBSO is fortunate to have Bronwyn Gibbs as Musical Director.
