MBSO was formed in 2011 as the result of an amalgamation between two local orchestras, the Redcliffe City Orchestras Inc. (1977) and the Seaside Symphony Orchestra (2000).

MBSO is under the professional musical direction of Bronwyn Gibbs and has membership of all ages and from all walks of life including music educators, working professionals, advanced students, keen amateurs and retirees. MBSO is a non-profit community orchestra, which means that members voluntarily give their time and musical expertise to play music - both for their own enjoyment and for the local community. The orchestra funds itself through members' contributions and performances.

We welcome new members who play string, woodwind, brass and percussion instruments. The music we play ranges from medium to advanced levels; therefore players need to be approximately at AMEB (Australian Music Examinations Board) or Trinity College of Music Grade 5 standard. We do not audition, instead there is a six week trial period during which prospective members come and play with the orchestra.

MBSO continues to promote musical excellence by featuring local talent in performances. Concerts have included the work of local composers and soloists as well as school and community ensembles in choral and orchestral works. Recent concerts have included soloists such as singer Julie McCoy and Judit Molnar, cellist Renat Yusupov, violinists Spiros Rantos and Verity Van Rooyen and pianist Brachi Tillies and the JAFA Community Choir.
